Luxury fashion brand Louis Vuitton seems to have taken Rivers’ quote to heart and the Lockit bag, the It accessory of the season, is all about locks and keys.
A reinterpretation of the iconic Knick Knack bag which Adidas Canada was conceived in 1958, the lock is sometimes made of 18 carat gold, at others, it is diamond encrusted.
The Lockit plays on the obsessive desire for privacy and nurtures the belief that the contents of a woman’s handbag are for her eyes only.
This desire to brand a bag precious and do away with the notion that bags change with season has seen the distinctive shaped original make a comeback in this sexy form.

While the shape of the Knick Knack (fished out from the archives by Marc Jacobs) remains largely unchanged, all comparisons between it and the Lockit end there. The new style is a far cry from the ‘chine’ canvas of the original and relies instead on luxurious textures and materials like crocodile and python leather, sheepskin, ostrich and Guipure lace.
The details are faultless and each line is given a unique identity by being created in rubberised leather accented with glossy tape; or in jewel shades of patent monogram bouclette; even in nylon with resin handles.
It is the fine craftsmanship that goes into its creation that is part of its allure. As part of Louis Vuitton’s Spring/ Summer 2012 look, the bags are embroidered inside and out with the recognisable monogrammed pattern and trimmed with white leather. The iconic bag is available in four variants: the Lockit clutch (complete with a handcuff symbolising a woman’s attachment to her bag), the diminutive Lockit BB, the classic Lockit and the roomy Lockit Voyage, recalling the bag’s origins as part of a light luggage line.
