Los Gatos joins 23 other cities in Santa Clara
LOS GATOS A ban on single use plastic bags at retail stores in Los Gatos went into effect Monday and patrons will have to either bring a reusable bag or pay 10 cents for a recyclable paper bag, a city official said.
The Los Gatos Tow Adidas Shoes n Council adopted the ordinance on Sept. 3 to encourage a shift to reusable bags to reduce litter and the impact that plastic bags have on waterways and marine life, according to assistant to the town manager Christina Gilmore.
The ordinance applies to retail businesses and exempts restaurants, non profit and charitable reuse operations such as thrift stores Adidas Shoes , and stores providing services such as dry clearing, town officials said.
St Adidas Shoes arting Monday, stores are allowed to give customers paper bags made of at least 40 percent recycled materials, and that must be 100 percent recyclable, for at least 10 cents each, officials said.
Bags designated as reusable must be made of machine washable fabric or a durable plastic at least 2.25 mil, or thousandths of an inch, thick, according to Gilmore.
The law exempted restaurants because it could be difficult for people who ordered hot food to carry it without a bag, Gilmore said.
Los Gatos joined 23 other cities in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties in a regional campaign to thwart environmental damage wrought by single use carry out plastic bags, Gilmore said.
The county and city governments sought to pass the same uniform law to avoid confusion since people tend to shop in multiple cities, Gilmore said.
Most cities i Adidas Shoes n the two counties have already banned plastic bags, Gilmore said.
In Santa Clara County, Campbell’s law took effect last Monday, and Morgan Hill’s will start on April 22 to coincide with Earth Day, a day celebrated worldwide to promote environmental awareness, Gilmore said.
